Additional qualification for teachers in integration courses (ZQ DaZ)

Concept with elective modules

Since 2005, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has enabled interested teachers without a relevant university degree to be admitted as teachers in integration courses by participating in an additional qualification programme.

The first concept for an additional qualification for teachers in the field of German as a second language was developed, published and implemented nationwide by the Federal Office between 2003 and 2006. From the outset, the International Federation in Munich was one of the institutions authorised to offer this additional qualification. Due to advanced professional standards in the field of language and further training, as well as further developments in the framework conditions for integration courses, the Goethe-Institut redesigned the content and structure of the additional qualification on behalf of the BAMF.

The additional qualification is structured as a competence-oriented modular (face-to-face) course. The term ‘competence’ encompasses specialist knowledge, relevant skills and abilities, as well as the roles and attitudes of a teacher in integration courses, which enable appropriate and professional teaching in various classroom situations. After each compulsory module, there is a practical testing or reflection phase to ensure the most effective possible integration of theory and practice. To this end, a portfolio is to be worked on alongside the five compulsory modules of the additional qualification and completed after all compulsory modules have been finished.

This additional qualification comprises 140 teaching units (TU) and consists of five compulsory modules (108 TU in total) and two so-called elective modules (16 TU each) as well as the creation of a portfolio.

The face-to-face modules take place at our language institute in Munich, while the online modules take place on the BigBlueButton platform or on MS Teams.
